Good news: On 23 March 2007, the UK Government signed the Council of Europe Convention on Action Against trafficking in Human Beings. This is good news and a great success for all those who have campaigned for the UK to sign the Convention.

Amnesty International, Anti-Slavery International and UNICEF UK are urging the UK Government to ratify and implement the Convention to the highest standard as a matter of urgency.

The agencies further urge the Government to take the lead in encouraging other states to ratify this standard, as a total of ten countries need to ratify this crucial convention before it can come into force.

Ratifying this convention will guarantee minimum standards of protection for any person trafficked into the UK including:

• A minimum reflection and recovery period;
• Access to specialist support, emergency medical care, legal advice and safe housing;
• Temporary residence permits for those who may be in danger if they return to their country of origin or, in the case of a child, if it is in their best interest to remain in the UK.
